INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP
RESEARCH ON TUBERCULOSIS
State of the art in Russia and way toward the foundations of a Russian research cluster
A 2-day International Workshop “Research on Tuberculosis” held at the Presidium of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) on October 18-19, 2007. The event was sponsored by the International Technology and Science Center (ISTC) and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBS), and had the emphasis on state of the art of TB research in Russia in order to establish a Russian TB prevention cluster – a scientific consortium that aims at a better TB control by accumulating mental and financial resources for research and development in the field of clinical and experimental TB. The international part was represented by leading Western scientists who coordinate TB research on the basis of large institutions and multi-team scientific consortia around the world.
Opening and welcoming remarks were delivered by representatives of the RAS, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (RAMS), ISTC, BTEP-DHHS and EU. The conference itself was in the form of three major scientific sessions, a poster session and a closing session for finding a way toward foundation of the Russian TB Cluster. Presentations delivered at three scientific sessions (entitled “Overview of Research in TB”, “Immunological Aspects” and “Molecular Epidemiology”) covered the following major topics:
(i) ongoing support of TB research by funding agencies and organization of complex, multi-team studies;
(ii) integrative overviews of the current work on TB performed by consortia and individual scientific centers;
(iii) basic TB research - state of the art;
(iv) development of novel vaccines and drugs;
(v) molecular epidemiology and evolution of mycobacteria;
(vi) new technical tools and approaches for the TB studies.
Discussion during the closing session ended up with a consensus decision that the establishment of Russian TB prevention cluster (RTB-cluster) would be an important step towards a better TB control and prevention in Russian Federation. A provisional text of the document declaring RTB-cluster establishment was reconciled, and should be finalized by the participants before November 5, 2007. A coordinating group for the RTB-cluster creation was elected consisting of: Coordinator – Prof. Alexander Apt (Central Institute for Tuberculosis, Moscow); Members – Prof. Arseny Kaprelyanz (Bach Institute of Biochemistry, Moscow), Prof. Boris Naroditsky (Gamaleya Institute for Microbiology and Epidemiology, Moscow), Dr. Sergey Biketov (State Research Center for Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, Obolensk), Sergey Tatkov (State Research of Virology and Biotechnology, Novosibirsk).
